The water body and surrounding lands create habitats where over 180 different bird species can be observed during their seasonal migrations.
The sanctuary was established in 1991 to protect the wetland and its bird populations in the Etah district. This designation as a protected area represented an important effort to safeguard avian habitats in the region.
The sanctuary near Jalesar, known as Bell City, maintains natural habitats for both resident birds and seasonal visitors from distant regions.
The site is easily accessible via the Agra-Etah-Aligarh road, with Etah railway station offering train connections from nearby cities. Visiting during the cooler months provides the best bird-watching experience when migratory species arrive in larger numbers.
The Northern Pintail appears here in remarkable numbers and reaches peak populations during December and January. This species stands out as the dominant waterfowl across the entire lake compared to all other bird types.
