Mundra Port, Commercial port in Gujarat, India
Mundra Port is a seaport on the northwest coast of India in the state of Gujarat. The facility handles cargo across four container terminals and maintains berths for oil tankers, bulk carriers, and other vessel types.
Operations began in 1998 when the oil tanker MT Alpha-2 docked as the first vessel. Since then the harbor expanded step by step with additional terminals and infrastructure for different cargo types.
The name Mundra refers to the local geography and points to trade routes that once connected coastal settlements in Kutch. Families from nearby villages now work in different sections of the harbor, shaping the region's growing role in commerce.
The harbor sits on the coast of Kutch district and connects to the mainland through road links and a railway line. Visitors require special permits to access the port area because it operates as an industrial facility.
On the northwest coast this is the only terminal processing bitumen in larger quantities for the region. The facility also performs maintenance work on ships while they wait for cargo.
