Chausath Yogini Temple, Mitaoli, Hindu temple in Morena district, India.
Chausath Yogini Temple in Mitaoli is a circular Hindu temple in the Morena area that has been declared a monument of national importance. The round outer walls enclose sixty-five small chambers surrounding an open courtyard, with each chamber once housing a different goddess.
Builders from the Kachchhapaghata dynasty erected this temple in the eleventh century as a place for religious ceremonies and studies. Scholars later used the structure to observe the sky and explore mathematical theories.
The name comes from Sanskrit, with Chausath meaning sixty-four and Yogini referring to female tantric deities. Pilgrims today visit the circular walls to experience the tradition of divine femininity that has been honored in this region for centuries.
The staircase with its hundred steps leads from ground level up to the entrance, and the climb requires sturdy footwear. Once at the top, visitors have a wide view over the landscape around the hill.
The round shape and floor plan of this temple served as a model for the design of the Indian Parliament building in New Delhi. This connection shows how ancient structures can shape modern architecture.
