Kanthaswamy Temple, Cheyyur

Kanthaswamy Temple, Cheyyur, Hindu temple in Cheyyur, India

The Kanthaswamy Temple is a Hindu temple in Cheyyur featuring Dravidian-style architecture with an east-facing sanctum. Inside are statues of Murugan alongside his consorts Valli and Deivasena, as well as other sacred figures representing divine concepts.

This temple was built in the 10th century during the Chola dynasty period of South Indian rule. Centuries later, inscriptions from the 15th-century Vijayanagar Empire record land donations that sustained its role as a religious center.

This temple is dedicated to Murugan and serves as a place of worship and family pilgrimage for visitors throughout the year. Annual festivals like Vaikasi Visagam and Kanthasasti draw people who come to observe rituals and religious traditions.

The temple is located roughly a hundred kilometers from Chennai and can be reached by bus or private vehicle. Morning hours tend to be quieter and offer a more comfortable time for visiting.

The temple holds 27 sculptures representing the 27 stars in Hindu astronomy, linking divine concepts with the movements of the cosmos. This collection makes it an uncommon example of how astronomical ideas were expressed in temple art.
