Masani barrage, Water management structure in Rewari District, India
Masani barrage is a dam with 18 gates that regulate water flow across the Sahibi River while also functioning as a road bridge. The structure spans the riverbed and connects both banks together.
Construction began in 1979 in response to severe flooding that occurred two years earlier, and was completed in 1989. The project emerged from the need to better control the river and protect the region from future floods.
The barrage serves as a vital water management point that local farmers depend on for irrigation throughout the year. For visitors, it represents how communities in this region have learned to work with the Sahibi River to support agriculture and daily life.
The barrage is easily accessible and doubles as a road for through traffic, making it simple to visit. The best time to visit is during the monsoon season when water levels are high and the structure appears most impressive.
After 2017, the water surface transformed into a permanently filled lagoon that created wetland zones and shallow pools. These new wetlands attract large flocks of migratory birds each winter that travel from colder regions to spend the season.
