Castle of Aamaj, Ancient defensive castle in Bastak County, Iran
The Castle of Aamaj is an ancient fortification standing on a hill beside a palm oasis in the Bastak region with clearly visible walls. The structure extends across different sides with varying dimensions, with the southern side being the longest.
The castle was built during the Sassanid period between 226 and 651 AD and served as an important administrative and military center for the region. Over the following centuries, natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods significantly damaged the structure.
The fortification shows traditional Persian defensive design that you can still see in how the walls and trenches were laid out. This style was typical for major strongholds in the ancient world.
The castle ruins are reachable by road through Kukherd District in Hormozgan Province and approach the site quite closely. It is wise to check local conditions before visiting since the area is remote.
A flood in 1367 caused substantial damage to the castle structure and left traces that archaeologists still study today. These events reveal how even large strongholds were vulnerable to natural forces.
