Sardasht Dam, Embankment dam in Sardasht County, Iran.
Sardasht Dam spans 275 meters across the Little Zab River with a rock-fill earth core structure that reaches 116 meters high. The barrier holds back water to generate electricity and supply irrigation downstream.
Planning and surveys for the dam started in 1999, and construction kicked off following approval in 2011. The project took years to move from the study phase into actual building.
The structure supports agricultural practices across the surrounding communities of West Azerbaijan, enabling farmers to water their fields throughout the year. Local life and seasonal rhythms have become tied to the water management that the dam provides.
The site is most accessible during warmer months when roads are reliable and weather does not interfere with visiting. Wear sturdy shoes as the terrain around the structure is uneven and can be rocky.
The reservoir can hold up to 545 million cubic meters of water, making it one of the largest water storage facilities in the region. This massive capacity allows it to buffer long dry periods and keep water flowing to farms and towns.
