Mount Vesuvius, Active volcano in Naples metropolitan area, Italy

Mount Vesuvius rises 1281 meters above the Gulf of Naples, featuring a crater 450 meters wide and 300 meters deep.

The eruption of 79 AD destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, preserving them under layers of volcanic material for centuries.

Scientific research at Mount Vesuvius has contributed to modern volcanology, with continuous monitoring systems tracking all geological and seismic activities.

Visitors can access the summit through a network of paths starting from the Vesuvius National Park entrance at 1000 meters elevation.

The volcano contains a double structure with Mount Somma's ancient crater partially enclosing the newer Vesuvius cone, separated by Valle del Gigante.
