The Vesuvius funicular railway extends from the base to a higher elevation of Mount Vesuvius, enabling transportation across steep volcanic slopes.
Hungarian entrepreneur Ernesto Emanuele Oblieght initiated the funicular's construction in 1880, marking the first mechanical transport system on the volcano.
The funicular's inauguration in 1880 inspired the creation of the renowned Neapolitan song 'Funiculì Funiculà' by composers Peppino Turco and Luigi Denza.
The railway system operated until 1944, when a volcanic eruption caused extensive damage to the infrastructure, leading to the permanent closure of operations.
From the funicular's highest point, passengers could observe distant locations including Procida island and coastal views extending toward France and Spain.
