Palazzo dello Sport, Multi-purpose sports arena in EUR district, Rome, Italy
Palazzo dello Sport is a multi-purpose sports venue in the EUR district of Rome with a circular shape and a dome spanning 95 meters (312 feet) in diameter. The facade consists of glass panels while the dome is made from reinforced concrete.
The facility was built in 1958 and officially opened two years later to serve as the main indoor hall for the 1960 Summer Olympics. Since then, it has hosted numerous sporting events and concerts.
The building now serves as a venue for national league basketball games and concerts by artists from different countries. Visitors see both sporting events and musical performances inside a hall with a circular floor plan and a high ceiling.
Inside there are several meeting rooms and a 300-seat restaurant as well as an outdoor terrace covering 2,700 square meters (29,000 square feet). From the terrace you can see the lake in the EUR district and the surrounding buildings.
The construction combines ferrocement with reinforced concrete and is considered an example of 20th-century Italian rationalism. This building method made it possible to erect the wide-span dome without central supports inside the hall.
