The temple, constructed in the late second century BC by architect Hermodoros of Salamis, represents the earliest marble building preserved in Rome.
The temple transformed into a Christian church in 1140 under Pope Innocent III, receiving dedication to Santo Stefano and later to Santa Maria del Sole.
The temple structure opens for visitors through guided tours, with current preservation efforts focusing on column stability and marble surface conservation.
The temple contains both Greek and Luna marble columns, with ten replacements dating from repairs during the reign of Emperor Tiberius in 15 AD.
