The church contains three pagan mausoleums later used by Christians and features an underground network of burial chambers extending beneath the structure.
The basilica was rebuilt in the 17th century under Cardinal Scipione Borghese, with initial work by architect Flaminio Ponzio followed by Giovanni Vasanzio.
The basilica houses the relic chapel containing a stone with Jesus footprints, one arrow from Saint Sebastian martyrdom, and a section of the column.
The basilica opens daily from 7:00 to 18:30 between March and October, while winter hours run from 8:00 to 17:30 from November to February.
The term catacomb originated from this location, initially called ad catacumbas due to the valley position near pozzolana quarries used for underground burials.
