Schöne-Aussicht-Hütte, Mountain hut in Schnals Valley, Italy.
The Schöne-Aussicht-Hütte is a mountain hut in South Tyrol, set in the glacial area of the Schnals Valley within the Ötztal Alps, at around 2,800 meters (9,200 feet). It offers overnight stays and meals for hikers and climbers passing through this high alpine area.
The hut was opened in 1896, making it one of the oldest continuously used mountain shelters in this part of the Alps. Over the decades it was expanded several times to accommodate more mountaineers passing through.
The hut serves dishes that blend traditions from Italy and South Tyrol, showing the culinary diversity of this Alpine region. Visitors sit between two cultures while enjoying local ingredients and cooking methods.
The hut is generally open during summer and in certain winter months, so it is worth checking current opening periods before you set out. The access routes are steep and can be icy, so solid footwear is essential.
The hut stands close to the area where Ötzi the Iceman, a naturally preserved human body dating back thousands of years, was discovered in 1991. Walkers in this area are passing through terrain that people have crossed since prehistoric times.
