Langtauferer Ferner

Langtauferer Ferner is a glacier on the northern flank of Weißkugel peak in the Ötztal Alps. The ice field spans several kilometers between 2410 and 3730 meters in elevation.

The glacier has been losing ice cover at a steady pace over recent decades. These changes reflect the broader impact of climate shifts on high alpine regions.

The Glacier Educational Trail, established in 2007, guides visitors from Melager Alm to Weißkugelhütte, explaining glacial formations and changes.

Access to the glacier is via hiking trails from Melager Alm towards Weißkulgelhütte. The routes demand good fitness and mountain experience, so visitors should bring warm gear and alpine equipment.

The ice field splits into two sections around the northern ridge of Weißkugel, with the larger portion lying east of the crest. This unusual shape arises from the mountain's topography and creates distinct snow and ice conditions in each area.
