Chiesa del Carmine

Chiesa del Carmine, Catholic church in Messina, Italy.

The Chiesa del Carmine is a Catholic church in Messina built with a Greek cross floor plan and several interior chapels, each containing different altarpieces. The structure features an octagonal dome with circular windows and polychrome marble decorations throughout.

The Messina earthquake of 1908 destroyed much of the city, including the original church that once stood on this site. Architect Cesare Bazzani designed this new structure as a modern replacement for the lost building.

The church reflects a local devotion to Mary that remains visible in its chapels and religious artworks displayed throughout the interior. Visitors can sense how this spiritual focus has shaped the space and continues to draw people for prayer and celebration.

The church is located on Via Porta Imperiale and is generally open during daylight hours when religious services take place, making it accessible to visitors throughout the week. Weekday visits offer a quieter experience for observing the architectural details and artworks.

A large Tamburini organ installed in 1954 remains inside the church, reflecting the importance of music in this community's worship. The instrument's range and complexity make the space notable for musical performances.
