Cascata del Catafurco, Natural waterfall in Galati Mamertino, Italy

Cascata del Catafurco is a natural waterfall in Galati Mamertino located within the Nebrodi Natural Park along the San Basilio torrent. The falling water has carved out a deep basin at its base, creating a distinct geological formation shaped by the force of the cascade.

The waterfall formed through the gradual erosion of the San Basilio torrent cutting through the bedrock over extended periods. This natural process shaped the current formation across centuries of water flow.

The name Marmitta dei Giganti, "pot of the giants", is given to the rock cavity at the foot of the falls where the water collects. In the warm season bathers use this basin, reached on foot from Galati Mamertino inside the Nebrodi park.

Access to the waterfall is via marked hiking paths that connect to the surrounding trail network in the park. Expect wet and slippery conditions near the cascade, so sturdy footwear and care are recommended for safe passage.

The Marmitta dei Giganti at the foot of the cascade is a cavity hollowed out of the rock by the falling water of the San Basilio torrent. In the warm season bathers use this basin, which the photograph shows as a rocky channel between boulders.
