Monte Soro, Mountain summit in Nebrodi Mountains, Sicily, Italy
Monte Soro is the highest summit in the Nebrodi Mountains of northeastern Sicily, reaching 1,847 meters above sea level. The top is open and largely grass-covered, forming a broad plateau-like area with wide views in all directions.
Monte Soro served for centuries as a natural boundary between different territories in Sicily, influencing where settlements developed across the region. The Nebrodi range it belongs to was long considered a refuge and a barrier, difficult to cross and hard to control.
Sheep and goats still graze on the open slopes of Monte Soro, as they have for generations. This pastoral practice shapes how the land looks today and connects the mountain closely to the daily life of nearby villages.
The most common starting point is Portella Femmina Morta, from where a marked trail leads up to the summit area. The climb is moderate and manageable for most people in decent shape, and sturdy footwear is recommended for the grassy terrain.
Transmission towers and broadcasting equipment installed at the summit make Monte Soro one of the main signal relay points for northeastern Sicily. From many towns in the area, the antennas on the peak are the most visible sign of the mountain on the horizon.
