Church of Saint Alexander

The Church of Saint Alexander is a religious building in Brescia featuring a neoclassical facade with Corinthian columns supporting an entablature topped by a triangular pediment. Eight chapels line its interior walls, providing spaces for private devotion and prayer.

This place of worship has roots dating back to the 5th century and underwent major reconstruction in 1769 following damage caused by a gunpowder explosion. Its current neoclassical facade was added in the early 1900s, giving the building the appearance it shows today.

The interior holds important artworks from the Renaissance period, such as the Annunciation by Jacopo Bellini created in 1444 and the Deposition by Vincenzo Civerchio made in 1504. These pieces show how the place has been a home for significant creative work over the centuries.

Visit during morning hours or early afternoon when light best highlights the architecture and interior details. Keep in mind that this is an active parish church, so entering during service times requires respectful behavior and awareness of ongoing worship.

The square facing the church features a fountain designed by sculptor Giovanni Donegani, which remains a distinctive element of the plaza today. This open space also offers a view of the elegant Martinengo Colleoni residence across the way.
