Church of San Pietro in Oliveto, Renaissance church on Cidneo hill, Brescia, Italy
The Church of San Pietro in Oliveto is a Renaissance building on the Cidneo hill with white and gray interior walls and a prominent dome above the main altar area. The exterior facade is constructed from Botticino marble and features Ionic columns.
The church was founded in the 11th century for Benedictine monks and underwent major renovation in the 15th century when the Regular Canons of San Giorgio took over the property. This transformation reshaped the building into its Renaissance form.
Inside, you can see religious artworks that tell biblical stories, most notably paintings showing Saint Peter and scenes of faith. These works fill the church with visual meaning and help visitors understand the spiritual purpose of the building.
Access to the church is available on weekdays with different hours in the morning and late afternoon, while Sundays and religious celebrations tend to have extended availability. It is helpful to check ahead if special events might affect visiting times.
The name comes from olive groves that once covered the Cidneo hill until they were destroyed during a medieval siege of the city. This memory of the landscape is preserved in the church's name today.
