Eur, Business district in southern Rome, Italy
EUR is an administrative and business district in southern Rome with monumental marble buildings, wide boulevards, and modern office complexes. The area centers on an artificial lake surrounded by green spaces and hosts several museums and shopping centers.
Construction began in the 1930s under Mussolini for a planned world fair in 1942. World War II significantly interrupted the project, with most work completed only after 1950.
The Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana, with its grid of arches, blends classical Roman forms with 1930s modernist design. The wide streets and white buildings create a district that feels quite different from the rest of Rome.
Metro Line B connects the district quickly to central Rome and makes it easy to reach. The area is flat and walkable, with clear streets and landmarks that help you navigate.
The district was named after a planned world exposition and designed as an ideal city following Roman principles. Few visitors realize the architecture was intentionally monumental to create a vision of urban perfection.
