Porto Ulisse, Port in Ognina district, Catania, Italy

Porto Ulisse is the small harbour of Ognina, a peripheral district on the northern coast of Catania, set in an inlet of the rocky cliff about 3 miles north-east of Catania's port. A breakwater over 150 m long with a red signal light on its head, a smaller inner mole and floating pontoons shelter it. Depths run from 1.5 to 12 m, muddy inside and rocky outside.

This coastal area once had a river that flowed into the sea, but volcanic activity from Mount Etna reshaped the land over time. The eruptions buried the ancient waterway and created the geography visitors see today.

Fishing boats dock here daily, and the catch goes directly to local markets and restaurants, making this a vital part of how the city gets fresh seafood.

Visit early in the morning or late afternoon when fishermen are most active and boats come and go. The waterfront is easy to walk along, though surfaces can be uneven near the older sections.
