Santuario di San Michele Arcangelo al Monte Faito, Catholic shrine on Monte Faito, Vico Equense, Italy
The Santuario di San Michele Arcangelo al Monte Faito is a Catholic shrine and church building on Monte Faito, near Vico Equense in Campania. The stone structure sits at around 1,100 meters above sea level and includes a small shelter for visitors and bells donated by nearby municipalities.
The first building on this summit was a wooden oratory founded in the 6th century by Saints Catello and Antonino. The current stone church was built between 1937 and 1950, taking the place of that original timber chapel.
Pilgrims from the towns around the Gulf of Naples climb here each year to honor the Archangel Michael, whose devotion has deep roots in this part of Campania. The bronze sculptures of Saint Michael, Saint Catello, and Saint Antonino at the entrance mark the place as a shared point of reference for the surrounding communities.
The shrine sits on a mountain summit and can be reached on foot or by cable car from the valley below, so sturdy footwear is a good idea. There are few facilities at the top, so it is worth bringing water and anything else you might need for the visit.
The statue of Saint Michael on the altar was blessed by Pope Pius XII and later decorated with a silver sword, a diadem, and a shield, all added in 1992. These ornaments were offered by the faithful of the surrounding area as a sign of devotion that has continued to grow long after the church was built.
