Emilio Questa Hut, Mountain refuge at 2388 meters in Valdieri, Italy.
The Emilio Questa Hut sits on a rocky outcrop along the north shore of Portette Lake, surrounded by the peaks of Portette, Claus, and Prefouns. The refuge contains three shared dormitories across two floors with a total of 30 beds.
The building began as a military barracks that the Genoa section of Club Alpino Italiano converted into a mountain refuge in 1925. Subsequent renovations took place in 1937, 1952, and 1986.
The wooden dining room serves traditional Piedmontese dishes that connect visitors with local mountain food traditions while offering views of the Valasco valley.
The refuge sits in high alpine terrain with rocky paths requiring proper mountain equipment and experience to reach. Summer months offer the best conditions when trails are snow-free and fully accessible.
Manager Marco Bassino is among Italy's youngest refuge keepers, and his family life deeply ties to these mountains. His brother practices sheep herding while his sister competes in alpine skiing within the region.
