Castello di Murlo‏

Castello di Murlo‏, Medieval castle north of Perugia, Italy

Castello di Murlo is a medieval fortified structure north of Perugia sitting on a hilltop between Mount Elceto and Mount Tezio. The complex features a square-shaped watchtower and fortified walls that command views over the Tiber Valley.

The main tower of the castle originates from the 11th century, with additional fortified structures and defensive walls constructed between the 14th and 16th centuries. These building phases reflected the period when powerful families competed for control across the region.

The Oddi family transformed the military fortress into their countryside residence starting in the 16th century while keeping its defensive features visible. The stone walls and towers still show how living space and protection were intertwined in this place.

The property is privately owned and accessible only on foot, with visitors able to observe the castle exclusively from the nearby public road. The road itself is easy to reach from the surrounding area and offers clear views of the structures.

Archaeological findings near the castle include remains of an ancient prehistoric mountain fortification called Cerchiaia di Murlo on Mount Elceto's summit. This early settlement demonstrates that this strategic location has drawn human occupation for thousands of years.
