Castello di Procoio

Castello di Procoio, Medieval castle in Migiana di Monte Tezio, Italy

Castello di Procoio is a medieval castle near Migiana di Monte Tezio outside Perugia, built in stone and brick following traditional military design. Its square plan is defined by two truncated round towers positioned at the corners of the fortification.

Construction started in the early 12th century, and the structure evolved into an important local center over the centuries. The surrounding region was already well established with multiple inhabited settlements by the 13th century.

A small chapel inside honors Saint Eurasia, reflecting how the castle connected to the farming traditions of this region. This sacred space shows the role the building played in the spiritual life of local communities.

The castle has been fully restored and now offers accommodations with modern conveniences, though visitors can also explore its historic structures. Access to the site is well maintained, allowing guests to walk around the outer fortifications and study the overall layout.

The oldest section, known as the original 12th-century core, sits in the northwest corner and reveals the structure's origins. This location was chosen to keep watch over the trade route connecting Perugia and Gubbio and maintain regional control.
