The Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo stands as a rectangular structure with pink tufa stone walls, featuring five solid arcades and six arches on the second floor.
Built in 1156 as a papal palace by Pope Adrian IV, the building underwent restoration in 1255 under Pope Alexander IV to serve as residence for local magistrates.
The palace contains the Sala dei Quattrocento, which emerged from the 1472 division of the great hall into two separate chambers for civic gatherings.
The palace now operates as a congress center with three distinct spaces, including the Sala dei Quattrocento, the Expo Hall, and the Etruscan Hall.
In the building's basement, ancient Etruscan foundations remain visible, with stone blocks marked by an engraved letter A.
