Sumiyoshi Station, Metro and railway interchange in Koto, Japan
Sumiyoshi Station is an underground interchange serving two major railway lines through multiple levels with four side platforms. The facility handles connections between the Toei Shinjuku Line and Tokyo Metro Hanzomon Line, routing passengers through separate flows based on their destinations.
Operations began in 1978 when the Toei Shinjuku Line opened this stop, marking its role as a key interchange in eastern Tokyo. A second line was added 25 years later, transforming the station into a major connection for the metropolitan network.
The station connects residents to Kinshicho, a commercial district in eastern Tokyo that features department stores, entertainment venues and shopping centers.
Passengers should decide their direction before passing through ticket gates on the Shinjuku Line, as the platform routing separates flows by destination. This setup helps maintain smooth circulation and clear signage guides travelers through the underground passages.
Plans announced in 2021 will extend the Yurakucho line from Toyosu to Sumiyoshi Station, adding a third major connection by the mid-2030s.
