Koshikijima Islands, Island group in Satsumasendai, Japan
The Koshikijima archipelago consists of eleven islands in the East China Sea off the coast of Kyushu. The three inhabited islands stretch along a north-south axis and display rugged coastlines with small bays and fishing villages.
Until the late 19th century, fourteen separate villages formed the communities on these islands within Satsuma Province. After the Meiji administrative reform of 1889, these settlements merged into two larger village units.
Daily life follows the rhythm of tides and fishing cycles, with many residents working from small harbors and coastal settlements. The names of the three main islands translate to upper, middle, and lower, reflecting their geographical arrangement from north to south.
Ferries and jet foils connect the islands to the mainland at Sendai Port Terminal, with crossings occasionally canceled during rough sea conditions. Booking ahead is recommended during holiday periods and weekends.
Conservation authorities have designated this archipelago as an Important Bird Area because it shelters rare species such as the Japanese wood pigeon. Birdwatchers visit the islands especially during spring and autumn migration seasons.
