Fukiagehama, Sand dune beach on Satsuma Peninsula in Kagoshima, Japan
Fukiagehama is a sand dune beach on the Satsuma Peninsula in Kagoshima that stretches along the East China Sea in a curved shape. High sand dunes dominate the coastline, and several coastal lakes formed where sand barriers separated portions of the sea.
A tree-planting initiative in the mid-1800s established a pine forest along the shore to protect the dunes from erosion and shifting sand. This early environmental effort shaped the coastal landscape that exists today.
The beach hosts an annual sand sculpture festival where artists create large works that celebrate the coastal environment and draw visitors from nearby regions. These gatherings reflect how the community values and shares its natural surroundings with others.
Multiple camping areas along the beach offer hot water facilities and barbecue spaces for visitors who want to stay and cook. Traditional net fishing activities happen at designated spots if you want to observe or participate.
Six coastal lakes dot the area, with Lake Satsuma being the largest, each formed when moving sand dunes cut off sections of sea. This natural separation created distinct water environments that differ from the open ocean.
