Higashi-Shinjuku Station, Underground metro station in Shinjuku district, Japan
Higashi-Shinjuku Station is an underground metro station in the Shinjuku district of Tokyo, spread across three basement levels. Two separate subway lines stop here, the Toei Oedo Line and the Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin Line, each on its own floor.
The station opened on December 12, 2000, as part of an effort to improve connections in the eastern part of Shinjuku. The Fukutoshin Line was added in 2008, turning the stop into a link between two separate networks.
The entrances for the two lines are at different points at street level, so it helps to check which entrance leads to the right line before heading down. The station connects through underground passages to nearby office and shopping buildings, which is useful in wet weather.
The Toei Oedo Line is one of the deepest subway routes in Tokyo, and the stretch at this station sits far below the surface, which explains the long escalator rides passengers take to reach the platform. This depth was a result of the line having to pass beneath many other underground structures built before it.
