Shinjuku Koma Theater

Shinjuku Koma Theater, Former theater in Kabukichō, Tokyo, Japan

Shinjuku Koma Theater was an entertainment venue with approximately 2,088 seats, featuring a stage equipped with three concentric rotating circles. This technical setup allowed for complex productions and quick scene changes during performances.

The theater opened in December 1956 and served as a central entertainment hub in Tokyo's Kabukichō district for over fifty years. It closed at the end of 2008 and was demolished in 2011 to make way for Shinjuku Toho Building.

The theater presented numerous performances ranging from traditional Kabuki plays to musical shows, including the notable Kōhaku Uta Gassen competition in 1958.

The former theater was located in Kabukichō entertainment district and was easily accessible by various routes within the city. Visitors should note that the building no longer stands and the site is now occupied by the modern Shinjuku Toho Building.

The stage design incorporated ancient Greek theater elements while serving as a central platform for both traditional Japanese arts and modern entertainment forms.
