A-1 Pictures, Animation studio in Suginami, Japan
A-1 Pictures is an animation studio based in Suginami, Tokyo, creating series and films with a team of over 200 professionals. The offices sit in Naritahigashi, where artists, directors and producers work on multiple projects at the same time.
The studio was founded on May 9, 2005, by Mikihiro Iwata, a former Sunrise producer, as a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment Japan. Over the following years, it built a large portfolio of series and films.
The studio produces series and films that often adapt manga or novels, reaching a wide audience across Japan. Their output appears regularly on television, shaping viewing habits for many people who experience Japanese animation as part of everyday life.
The facility sits in a residential area of Tokyo and can be reached by public transport from the city center. Visits inside the building are not possible, as it remains a closed working space.
In 2010, the studio launched the Anime no Chikara project with TV Tokyo, which produced three original series. These included Sound of the Sky, Night Raid 1931 and Occult Academy, all created without literary source material.
