Tokyo Institute of Technology, Technical university in Ōokayama, Meguro, Japan
The Tokyo Institute of Technology is a technical university in Ōokayama, Meguro, focused on science, engineering, and technology programs. Its three sites spread across western and southern districts of Tokyo and host lecture halls, labs, and research spaces for several thousand students.
The school opened in 1881 as a trade institute and gained university standing in 1929. After the 1923 earthquake, it moved to its present main location.
The institution maintains a percentage of 17 percent international students, creating an environment where Japanese and global scientific approaches merge in research activities.
The Ōokayama, Suzukakedai, and Tamachi sites each connect through metro and railway lines. Visitors should note that most facilities require prior registration and campus activity is light on weekends.
A supercomputer on site runs simulations and calculations for materials research and solid-state physics. The school has produced several scientists who later won Nobel prizes.
