Tokorozawa, Special city in Saitama Prefecture, Japan
Tokorozawa covers 72 square kilometers (28 square miles) of the Musashino plateau and includes residential neighborhoods connected by the Seibu railway network. The settlements spread along the train lines and form a suburban belt between the Sayama Hills and the metropolitan area.
The area changed from an agricultural trading center during the Tokugawa period into the site of Japan's first aviation base in 1911. This shift marked the beginning of Japanese aviation history and shaped the later identity of the region.
The Kadokawa Culture Museum holds a collection of 37,000 manga volumes and presents contemporary art exhibitions in its Grand Gallery. Visitors can walk through the shelves and see how traditional Japanese storytelling connects with modern media.
The city offers direct train connections to central Tokyo, with departures from several stations including JR Higashi-Tokorozawa and Tokorozawa Station. Travel times range between 30 and 40 minutes depending on the line, and trains run regularly throughout the day.
Lake Sayama was built in 1934 within the Sayama Hills and supplies the region with water while supporting the production of regional Sayama green tea. The tea plantations on the slopes around the reservoir benefit from the mild microclimate and the moisture from the lake.
