Oyama, Industrial city in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan
Oyama is a city in Tochigi Prefecture, central Japan, that spreads along the Omoi River valley. Several train stations connect the area with Tokyo to the south and with northern regions of the country.
The settlement grew into a post station during the Tokugawa period along the route between Edo and Nikko. Earlier, a castle town had stood here, its military role later replaced by a commercial one.
The city maintains international relationships through sister city partnerships with Mission City in Canada, Cairns in Australia, and Lübz in Germany.
The Tohoku Shinkansen line offers fast connections to Tokyo and northern prefectures. Regional trains also serve several neighboring towns, making day trips into the countryside easier.
Producers in the surrounding area grow bottle gourds and dry their flesh into thin strips known as kanpyo, used in sushi and other dishes. This ingredient is traditionally peeled by hand and sun-dried.
