University of Tsukuba, National research university in Tsukuba, Japan
The University of Tsukuba is a national research university in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, covering a large area within the science city. The campus is divided into several zones connected by wide pathways and bicycle routes.
The roots go back to the Tokyo Higher Normal School founded in 1872, which evolved through several phases under different names. The current institution took shape in 1973 from this educational tradition.
The name comes from Mount Tsukuba, one of the most recognizable peaks in the region. The open green spaces between buildings create a campus environment where students from many countries gather and study together.
The campus is best explored by bicycle, as distances between building clusters can be considerable. Visitor centers provide orientation and information about individual faculties.
In 2023, this institution became the first Japanese public university to open an international campus in Malaysia. This expansion marked a new step in cross-border academic collaboration for the region.
