Shinjuku Highway Bus Terminal, Busbahnhof in Japan
Shinjuku Highway Bus Terminal was a bus station in Nishi-Shinjuku located near Shinjuku Station's west exit and housed on the ground floor of the MY Shinjuku No. 2 building. The facility had ticket windows, waiting areas, and posted schedules that guided passengers to their departing buses.
The terminal opened in 1971 and grew into a major hub for long-distance travel across Japan for over four decades. It closed in 2016 and was replaced by Busta, a larger new bus terminal at Shinjuku Station's south exit.
The terminal served as a gathering point where people from across Japan met to start or complete journeys. The name reflects its role as a highway hub that connected Tokyo with distant regions and mountain destinations.
The station was within walking distance of shops and restaurants, allowing travelers to eat or shop before departure. Its proximity to Shinjuku Station and simple signage made it easy for visitors to reach and find their buses.
The station was particularly popular with travelers heading to Fuji-Q Highland and Lake Kawaguchiko in Yamanashi Prefecture, making it a draw for hikers and tourists. Many bus routes from here connected Tokyo to mountain regions and coastal towns throughout Japan.
