Ichihara

Ichihara extends across 368 square kilometers of land between Tokyo Bay and the mountainous regions of the Boso Peninsula, mixing industrial zones with natural spaces.

The region transformed from 171 separate villages during the Meiji period into a unified city in 1963, marking a shift from agriculture to manufacturing.

The Kazusa Kokubun-ji temple ruins from the Nara period remain as physical evidence of the ancient provincial capital settlement in this region.

The city maintains 41 elementary schools, 21 middle schools, and 6 high schools, serving a population of 274,117 residents across 128,316 households.

Ichihara contains the highest concentration of oil refineries in Japan, forming a central part of the Keihin Industrial Zone along Tokyo Bay.
