Yoshioka-Kaitei Station, Underground railway station in Fukushima, Japan
Yoshioka-Kaitei Station is an abandoned railway station located within the Seikan Tunnel, which runs beneath the Tsugaru Strait between Honshu and Hokkaido. It features tracks, platforms, and safety systems including ventilation shafts and fire alarms that remain in place.
The station opened in 1988 and served as both a passenger stop and emergency evacuation point in the Seikan Tunnel until its closure in 2014. During its roughly 26 years of operation, it played a key role in the tunnel's safety infrastructure.
The station hosted a Doraemon exhibition in summer 2006, bringing Japanese pop culture into its underground halls. Such events showed how this remote location could serve as a temporary gathering space for visitors.
The station is no longer accessible by regular train service, but occasional tours or special events may offer entry to this underground location. Visitors should check in advance for access opportunities and wear appropriate clothing, as it remains cool at such depths.
The station sits approximately 150 meters below sea level and once held the record as the world's deepest underground railway station. This achievement highlights the extraordinary engineering required to build the Seikan Tunnel and its daring tunneling techniques.
