Bentenjima Station, railway station in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan
Bentenjima Station is a small elevated railway station in Maisakacho-Bentenjima on the Tokaido Main Line, situated on an island within Lake Hamana. The station features a single platform serving two tracks, with station buildings positioned underneath that provide shelter and access to ticket services and waiting areas.
The station opened in 1906 as a seasonal summer stop for beach visitors and became a full-time facility in 1916. It has remained part of the local transportation network ever since, serving both residents and travelers throughout the year.
Bentenjima Station has served as a gateway to local life and seaside traditions for over a century. Visitors today can see fishing practices and walk through nearby historic districts that preserve the character of Edo-period post stations, where traditional inns and gatehouses still stand.
Access to the platform requires using stairs as there are no elevators, which is important to note if you have luggage or mobility concerns. Plan ahead since restrooms are located outside the station building itself.
The station sits on an island in Lake Hamana, creating the sensation of floating on water from the wide platform. Meanwhile, the fast Tokaido Shinkansen trains pass very close by, producing a striking contrast between the peaceful waterside setting and the dramatic speed of passing trains.
