Sapporo TV Tower, Television tower in Odori Park, Japan
Sapporo TV Tower rises 147.2 meters above Odori Park, featuring five floors with an observation deck positioned at 90.38 meters. Inside, visitors find a souvenir shop, restaurant, and multiple levels to explore.
Architect Tachū Naitō completed the tower in 1957 as a broadcasting facility, with construction expenses reaching 170 million yen. It marked an important milestone in Sapporo's growth as a modern city.
The tower is connected to two local characters, Tawakkie and Television Daddy, who represent the landmark throughout the year in events and merchandise. These figures help create a bond between the structure and the community.
The observation deck is reached by elevators from the third floor, where you find a souvenir shop and restaurant alongside. Coming early in the day helps you avoid long queues.
Digital clocks were installed in 1961 at 65 meters height, making time visible to pedestrians walking below in an early public display. The system was modernized in 2006 when traditional bulbs gave way to LED technology.
