Rumoi Subprefecture, Administrative division in Hokkaido, Japan

Rumoi Subprefecture sits along the northwestern coast of Hokkaido facing the Sea of Japan, featuring varied landscapes from coastal areas to mountain zones. The region includes several municipalities with towns, ports, and rural farmland.

The region was reorganized in 1914 when the administrative center moved from Mashike to Rumoi. This shift established the current structure and identity we see today.

Towns here celebrate their ties to fishing through festivals that feature local seafood and regional dishes. These gatherings show how the coastal setting shapes community identity and daily traditions.

Trains run regularly from major Hokkaido cities to Rumoi City, which serves as the main transportation hub for the region. Local bus services and roads connect the different towns and coastal areas.

The region holds significant forest and marine resources despite having very few residents per area. This combination of natural wealth and sparse settlement is unusual for Japan.
