Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, International university in Beppu, Japan
Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University is an international higher education institution in the coastal city of Beppu on the Japanese island of Kyushu. Its buildings stretch across several hillside terraces overlooking the bay, linked by covered walkways and escalators between levels.
The university opened in 2000 through a joint initiative by the Ritsumeikan Trust, Oita Prefecture, and Beppu City. Its mandate from the start was to build an educational bridge between Japan and neighboring countries across the Asia-Pacific region.
The academic focus centers on Pacific Rim cultures and languages, reflected in seminars and student initiatives across the campus. Bilingual signage and parallel course offerings allow learners to move between English and Japanese contexts throughout their studies.
The campus sits on a hillside above central Beppu and is accessible by local bus or rental car. Most teaching buildings are wheelchair accessible, and visitors can move freely around the grounds during lecture periods.
The AP House dormitory pairs Japanese and international first-year students in shared living units throughout their initial year. This required arrangement helps language skills and mutual understanding grow through daily interaction.
