Imakane, town in Setana district, Hokkaido, Japan
Imakane is a small town in Setana District, on the island of Hokkaido in northern Japan. It sits in a rural setting surrounded by farmland and low hills, with a compact town center where shops, homes, and community buildings line the main road.
Settlement in the area grew in the late 19th century when migrants from other parts of Japan came to Hokkaido to open up new land. In the early 20th century, the town became a center for brick production, supplying materials used in construction across the island.
Imakane is known locally for its sweet corn, which is grown in the surrounding fields and sold at roadside stands during the summer harvest season. Passing through at that time of year, it is easy to spot the small stalls where farmers sell their produce directly to visitors.
The town center is small enough to walk around comfortably, with most services and shops within easy reach of each other. For trips into the surrounding rural areas, renting a car is a good option since bus services outside the center are limited.
Imakane was once one of the main sources of bricks used to build Hokkaido's early infrastructure, yet few signs of that industry remain visible in the town today. Some older buildings in the wider area were constructed with locally made bricks that were considered stronger than those produced elsewhere on the island.
