Usuzan Ropeway, Aerial tramway in Sobetsu, Japan.
The Usuzan Ropeway is an aerial tramway that carries visitors up Mount Usu along a cable route covering about 1.3 kilometers and climbing roughly 350 meters in height. The journey takes only about six minutes and offers views of the surrounding region as you ascend.
The ropeway opened in 1965 to provide easier access to the mountain summit and develop the area as a tourist destination. It was built as part of infrastructure expansion within Shikotsu-Toya National Park.
The ropeway allows visitors to witness the volcanic geology directly and understand how the landscape has been shaped by repeated eruptions over time. People come here to see nature's power and how it has reshaped the region.
Visitors should arrive early since the cabins hold a large number of people and wait times can build up during busy periods. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the summit area is uneven and often windy.
From the observation platform at the top, visitors can see Lake Toya, Showa Shinzan volcanic formation, and the central crater all at once from a single vantage point. This rare perspective reveals the geological story of the region simultaneously.
