Muroran Aquarium

Muroran Aquarium is a public facility that houses about 120 species of marine animals in specially designed tanks replicating the natural habitats of Hokkaido waters. The tanks are arranged to show the different conditions where these creatures live in the wild.

The facility was founded in 1953 as the first aquarium in Hokkaido, marking the beginning of marine education in the region. This establishment made it a pioneer in bringing knowledge about sea life to the public in northern Japan.

The facility works closely with local schools to teach children about the marine life found in Hokkaido waters. You will often see school groups observing the tanks and learning from staff members during visits.

The facility is located in an easily accessible area of the city and can be reached by public transport. Plan to spend about two to three hours to comfortably walk through all the tanks.

The facility was the first in Japan to successfully breed the Aburabouzu, a deep-sea fish from Hokkaido waters. This rare species is normally hard to observe, making the aquarium a special place for enthusiasts.
