Hakone Tozan Line, Mountain railway in Hakone, Japan
The Hakone Tozan Line extends 15 kilometers through mountains and forests, connecting Odawara Station with the terminal point at Gora Station.
Construction of the railway finished in 1919, making it the first mountain railway in Japan to use an electric system for passenger transportation.
The railway passes through Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, where passengers observe seasonal changes including summer hydrangeas and autumn maple trees.
Trains depart every 15 minutes from Hakone-Yumoto to Gora, with the journey taking 40 minutes and costing 460 yen per single trip.
The railway incorporates three switchback sections to manage the steep grade, requiring trains to reverse direction during the ascent through the mountains.
