Miura district, Administrative district in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan
Miura district is an administrative division in Kanagawa Prefecture that forms part of the Miura Peninsula. Today it encompasses only the town of Hayama, as other municipalities have separated into independent cities over time.
The area was originally part of ancient Sagami Province and became an official administrative division during the 1878 cadastral reform. Its structure changed dramatically in 1943 when neighboring municipalities absorbed several towns.
The name Miura comes from an ancient clan that shaped this region for centuries. Visitors can still see traces of this heritage in local shrines and place names throughout the area.
The best time to visit depends on the season, as each offers different experiences and varying weather conditions. Getting around the area works well by local transport, with different routes connecting various points of interest.
The district was once much larger, originally including many villages and towns across the entire peninsula in the 1870s. These transformations reveal how administrative boundaries shifted across Japan over the decades.
