Roppongi Station, Underground metro station in Roppongi district, Japan.
Roppongi Station is an underground metro station in the Roppongi district of Tokyo, serving two separate lines on different levels. The Hibiya Line and the Oedo Line each have their own platforms, connected by corridors and escalators within the same complex.
The station opened in 1964 as part of the expansion of Tokyo's Hibiya Line, which was developed in the years around the Summer Olympics. The Oedo Line was added much later, requiring a new platform to be built at a far greater depth.
The station sits beneath one of Tokyo's most active nightlife areas, and many passengers pass through on their way to clubs, restaurants, and galleries after dark. During the day, the crowd shifts toward visitors heading to the museums and art spaces nearby.
The two lines run on separate levels, so moving between them takes several minutes and should be factored into any connection. The station has multiple exits leading to different parts of the neighborhood, so checking the exit number before heading up saves time.
The Oedo Line platform sits about 42 meters (138 feet) below street level, which makes it the deepest point in Tokyo's entire subway network. The escalator ride down to that platform is noticeably longer than at almost any other station in the city.
