Yamazaki distillery, Whisky distillery in Shimamoto, Japan
Yamazaki Distillery sits where three rivers meet – the Katsura, Uji, and Kizu – drawing water from mountain springs for production. The facility includes production halls, aging warehouses, and a visitor center that together show the complete process.
The facility was founded in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii as Japan's first commercial whisky distillery. Masataka Taketsuru, who oversaw initial production, played a key role in establishing Scottish methods in the country.
The production methods blend Scottish distilling traditions with Japanese craftsmanship, creating a style that appeals to both international and local palates. Visitors can observe how heritage techniques guide the creation of each batch.
Tours require advance reservations and should be booked ahead of your visit. The site is easily accessible via the nearby train station and provides clear information for visitors at the entrance.
The site houses a collection of around seven thousand bottles of unblended single malt, showcasing production across several decades. This extensive lineup allows visitors to see differences between various aging periods firsthand.
